Boys’ basketball roundup: A toe on the line at the buzzer for Case preserves a Bristol-Plymouth win powered by Tucker Bumila (21 points, 22 rebounds, 5 blocks)
Bristol-Plymouth 59, Joseph Case 58 — Looking to avenge a 12-point loss to the Cardinals earlier in the season, Bristol-Plymouth watched its eight-point lead disappear in the final minute and a half. But after a referee determined Landon Cayton’s foot was on the line on the would-be tying 3-pointer, the Craftsmen (15-4) were awarded the one-point victory. “You gotta be kidding me,” B-P coach Tim LaPlante said of the shot. “We went into a 3-2 defense because we knew they needed to shoot a 3 and didn’t have any timeouts. We had it well-defended, he just got [it] off.” Senior center Tucker Bumila, who had a monstrous 21 points, 22 rebounds, and 5 blocks, was so excited by the news that he tweaked his ankle (he’s OK) turning to tell his teammates. “He was hobbling and pumping his hand in the air,” LaPlante said. “He turned around quick to tell us and then just dropped to the ground.” Juniors Ryan Donovan (13 points) and Zack Branco (12 points) contributed to the win, as the Craftsmen have clinched a share of their first Mayflower championship since 1979 and can win it outright with an Upper Cape win over Blue Hills on Wednesday.
